Mission: Impossible:- Fallout Holds Onto the No. 1 Spot in Weekend Box Office

“Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” the Tom Cruise action film featuring the star performing his own stunts, held on to the top spot in movie theaters this weekend, outdrawing three new releases including Walt DisneyCo.’s “Christopher Robin,” a live-action take on Winnie-the-Pooh.

“Fallout” collected $35 million in sales at U.S. and Canadian theaters, researcher ComScore Inc. estimated Sunday in an email. That was enough to top “Christopher Robin,” which opened in second place with $25 million, along with the Mila Kunis comedy “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and “The Darkest Minds,” a 21st Century Fox Inc. thriller.

The sixth film in the “Mission: Impossible” series is demonstrating that the franchise still has box-office vigor. That’s good news for Viacom Inc. and its Paramount Pictures division, which has struggled this year and was sixth in domestic sales, according to Box Office Mojo.

The R-rated action-comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, debuted in third with $12.1 million for Lionsgate.

Paramount Pictures’ Fallout brought in $35.3 million to bring its two-week total to $124.8 million, according to final figures on 6 August. That was enough to easily outpace Disney’s Christopher Robin, which debuted with $24.6 million in ticket sales.

Made for an estimated $75 million, Marc Forster’s live-action Winnie-the-Pooh revival stars Ewan McGregor as a grown-up Christopher Robin reunited with the beloved characters of the Hundred Acre Wood.
