{"id":7101,"date":"2019-01-18T06:38:09","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T01:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/?p=7101"},"modified":"2019-01-18T06:38:09","modified_gmt":"2019-01-18T01:08:09","slug":"odisha-boy-carries-dead-mother-on-bicycle-after-villagers-refuse-to-help-because-of-caste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/news\/odisha-boy-carries-dead-mother-on-bicycle-after-villagers-refuse-to-help-because-of-caste\/","title":{"rendered":"Odisha boy carries dead mother on bicycle after villagers refuse to help because of caste"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"briefcase mhide\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Teenager carries mother&#8217;s body for 4-5 km<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>She died when she went to fetch water and fell on the ground<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Incident happened in Karpabahal village<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-movie\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"movie-detail\"><strong>Here&#8217;s what a teenager from a village in Odisha had to endure after his mother died &#8212; and caste prejudice reared its ugly head.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"description\">\n<p><strong>As young Saroj pushed the cycle carrying his mother&#8217;s body down a crumbling lane, there was little to distract him from his thoughts but the sound of his own feet scraping against the loose gravel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Covered from head to toe, Janki Sinhania&#8217;s corpse was laid out across the seat on she might once have ridden pillion, and kept in balance by a stiff makeshift bunk.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When it was time to conduct her last rites, not even one of her neighbours in Karpabahal, a village in Odisha, wanted to help Saroj carry her body to the cremation ground.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Their reason: she belonged to a lower caste.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So Saroj, 17, carried her body on the bicycle for four to five kilometres.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He is said to have buried his mother in a forest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Janki Sinhania, who was 45, died when she went to fetch water and fell on the ground.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Her husband &#8212; a man from Sundergarh district whom she married ten years ago &#8212; is also dead. She stayed in her paternal village with her son and daughter after his death.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>During Janki Sinhania&#8217;s final journey, Saroj stood and answered questions in an unpaved village street, his head covered in a dirty towel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When he was asked whom the body belonged to, he spoke in a quiet voice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;My
