The\u00a0Supreme Court\u00a0on Monday directed the victims’ families in the\u00a0Rajiv Gandhi\u00a0assassination case to amend their petitions of not releasing the convicts, and file fresh petitions after three weeks.
\nIn May 1991,\u00a0Rajiv Gandhi\u00a0was assassinated by a suspected\u00a0Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam\u00a0(LTTE) suicide bomber, during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in\u00a0Tamil Nadu.
\nThe attack also left 14 other people killed, whose kin have been opposing the release of the convicts after the\u00a0All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagham\u00a0(AIADMK)-led\u00a0Tamil Nadu\u00a0government recommended to get them out of prison.
\nThe families had recently sought a meeting with\u00a0Tamil Nadu\u00a0Governor\u00a0Banwarilal Purohit\u00a0to persuade him to not give his consent to the state government’s recommendation.
\nOn Saturday, Governor Purohit refuted reports that a recommendation from the state government has been forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
\n“It is clarified that no reference has been made to the Ministry of Home Affairs in the matter. The case is a complex one and involves the examination of legal, administrative and Constitutional issues,” a press release from the Raj Bhavan stated.
\nMeanwhile,\u00a0AIADMK\u00a0leader,\u00a0D. Jayakumar\u00a0urged the Governor to accept the recommendation, saying that the state cabinet’s decision to recommend the release of the convicts reflected the will of the people of the state.
\nThe\u00a0Tamil Nadu\u00a0Cabinet, led by Chief Minister\u00a0E. K. Palaniswami, had on September 9 recommended the release of all the seven convicts, Nalini, Perarivalan, Murugan, Santhan, Robert Pious, Jayakumar and Ravichandran, who are serving life terms and have been in jail for the last 27 years, to Governor\u00a0Banwarilal Purohit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
