{"id":3791,"date":"2018-09-04T13:06:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T07:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/?p=3791"},"modified":"2018-09-04T13:06:03","modified_gmt":"2018-09-04T07:36:03","slug":"how-the-brain-cells-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/news\/how-the-brain-cells-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"How the brain cells &#8216;talk&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a new technique, scientists have developed a way to see\u00a0brain cells\u00a0talk\u00a0&#8211; to actually see neurons communicate in bright, vivid colour.<br \/>\nThe new lab technique is set to provide long-needed answers about the brain and\u00a0neurological diseases\u00a0such as Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, schizophrenia and depression. Those answers will facilitate new and vastly improved treatments for conditions that have largely resisted scientists&#8217; efforts to understand them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/brain_2297.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-3792\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/brain_2297-300x167.jpg?resize=347%2C193&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nResearcher J. Julius Zhu said, &#8220;Before we didn&#8217;t have any way to understand how [such neurotransmissions] work. In the case of Alzheimer&#8217;s, in particular, we spent billions of dollars and we have almost no effective treatment. &#8230; Now, for the first time, we can see what is happening.&#8221;<br \/>\nTo demonstrate the technique&#8217;s effectiveness, Zhu&#8217;s team in Charlottesville and colleagues in China have used it to visualize a poorly understood neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. &#8220;It affects Alzheimer&#8217;s, schizophrenia, emotions, depression, all kind of emotion-related diseases and mental problems,&#8221; added Zhu.<br \/>\nAcetylcholine also plays critical roles elsewhere in the body, such as regulating insulin secretion in the pancreas and in controlling stress and blood pressure.<br \/>\nDrugs designed to combat Alzheimer&#8217;s disease actually inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that degrades acetylcholine, to boost the effect of diminishing acetylcholine released in the brain.<br \/>\n&#8220;These drugs are not very effective,&#8221; Zhu said. &#8220;They only offer a minor improvement, and once you stop the drug [the symptoms] just seem much worse. So probably in trying to treat these patients, you temporarily enhance them but you actually make them even worse.&#8221;<br \/>\nBy being able to see acetylcholine and other neurotransmitters in action in fluorescent color, doctors will be able to establish a baseline for good health and then work to restore that in patients with\u00a0neurological diseases.<br \/>\nThe full findings are present in the journal- Nature Biotechnology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a new technique, scientists have developed a way to see\u00a0brain cells\u00a0talk\u00a0&#8211;
