Atal Bihari Vajpayee<\/b>\u00a0; born 25 December 1924 – 16 August 2018)\u00a0<\/sup>\u00a0was\u00a0 an Indian politician who thrice served as the\u00a0Prime Minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, for a period of eleven months from 1998 to 1999, and then for a full term from 1999 to 2004.<\/p>\n

He was a member of the\u00a0Indian Parliament\u00a0for over four decades, being elected to the\u00a0Lok Sabha, the lower house, ten times, and twice to the\u00a0Rajya Sabha, the upper house. He served as the\u00a0Member of Parliament\u00a0for\u00a0Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh until 2009 when he retired from active politics due to health concerns. Vajpayee was among the founding members of the erstwhile\u00a0Bharatiya Jana Sangh\u00a0which he also headed from 1968 to 1972. He was the\u00a0Minister of External Affairs\u00a0in the cabinet of Prime Minister\u00a0Morarji Desai.<\/p>\n

When the\u00a0Janata government\u00a0collapsed, Vajpayee restructured the Jana Sangh into the\u00a0Bharatiya Janata Party\u00a0in 1980. He was the first Indian prime minister not belonging to the\u00a0Indian National Congress\u00a0to serve a full five-year term. At age\u00a093, Vajpayee is currently the\u00a0oldest living former Indian Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

He was conferred India’s highest civilian honour, the\u00a0Bharat Ratna, by the\u00a0President of India\u00a0in 2014.<\/sup>\u00a0It was declared by the Modi government in 2014 that Vajpayee’s birthday, 25 December, would be marked as\u00a0Good Governance Day<\/sup><\/p>\n
