India will launch its first manned space mission by 2022 and roll\u00a0out a health insurance scheme from September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday in his last Independence Day speech ahead of next year’s general election.<\/p>\n
Modi, a powerful speaker who will seek re-election in the world’s biggest democracy early next year, used the speech to broadcast his government’s achievements,\u00a0amid concerns about lack of jobs and rising violence against the Muslim minority.<\/p>\n
Wearing a flowing saffron turban, the Hindu nationalist leader also announced the plan to take the “Indian tricolour to space” in a manned mission that would make India the fourth nation to launch one, after the United States, Russia and China.<\/p>\n

“In space technology, we have dreamt something, our scientists have dreamt something. And I am happy to announce that by 2022, the 75th Independence year, we are planning a manned space mission,” Modi said in his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.<\/p>\n
We will put an Indian in space by 2022 or earlier,” he said.<\/p>\n
He said India was proud of its scientists, who were excelling in their research and were at the forefront of innovation.<\/p>\n
“Our scientists have made us proud. They launched over 100 satellites… They successfully completed the Mars mission.”<\/p>\n
