Image Courtesy: Hindustan University<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Encased in a\u00a03D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) exterior, it weighs as much as a\u00a0chicken&#8217;s egg might \u2014 33\u00a0grams and was\u00a0designed\u00a0as a contestant in the\u00a0\u2018Cubes in Space\u2019 competition organized annually by the NASA&#8217;s Colorado Space Grant consortium and partner organization,\u00a0<strong>iDoodle learning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Cubes in Space is a global competition encouraging students 11\u00a0to 18 years of age to design an experiment, and have\u00a0it launched into space on one of\u00a0NASA&#8217;s rockets at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the nature of\u00a0its experiments,\u00a0Jaihind-1S will be\u00a0carried up by a balloon instead, to an altitude of 70 km.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4886461\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4886461\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.firstpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/team.jpg?resize=1280%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"'Jaihind-1S' was developed by KJ Harikrishnan, P Amarnath, G Sudhi and T Giri Prasad, who are first-year engineering students from the Hindustan Institute of Technology &amp; Science, Tamil Nadu. Image Courtesy: Hindustan University<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Once it reaches\u00a0its desired altitude, it will disengage from the balloon, and measure a host of different\u00a0things in the atmosphere during\u00a0its\u00a0gradual fall over 15-20 hours.\u00a0It\u00a0was designed\u00a0to study 20 different weather parameters, collect data\u00a0of four of these parameters per\u00a0second, and store this data\u00a0on a built-in SD card.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0satellite is also geared\u00a0up to test how it&#8217;s nylon casing shapes up in microgravity, and will keep tabs on its trajectory as it flies.<\/p>\n<p>Around this time last year,\u00a0a similar record-holding satellite\u00a0was developed for its\u00a0lightweight design \u2014 also in Tamil Nadu \u2014 for the same competition.\u00a0Coined\u00a0&#8216;Kalam SAT&#8217; after the former president A P J Abdul Kalam, it\u00a0was a tad heftier than the new\u00a0&#8216;lightest satellite ever made&#8217;, weighing 64 grams, and was wildly successful in its 12-minute mission to study the effect of microgravity on its carbon-fibre body.<\/p>\n<p><em>With inputs from ANI, Hindustan University<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is designed to study 20 different weather parameters and microgravity&#8217;s effect on its nylon body.
