This is as close as a debut gets to a tragedy. Janhvi Kapoor is\u00a0 poised for\u00a0 her big launch.\u00a0 It can\u2019t get any bigger than Karan Johar, can it now? Unless she got Sanjay Leela Bhansali to launch her, which she didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Sridevi must be very happy seeing her daughter shining even before\u00a0 her debut. Strangely\u00a0 I am reminded\u00a0 of\u00a0 Smita\u00a0 Patil who passed away\u00a0 long before she could see her son become\u00a0 an actor. The child never saw\u00a0 his mother. Today\u00a0 Prateik is\u00a0 struggling to make his\u00a0 presence felt.<\/p>\n

Prateik has\u00a0 gone through\u00a0 more than his\u00a0 share\u00a0 of struggle. Being\u00a0 motherless and living away\u00a0 from his father actor-politician Raj Babbar, Prateik was rudderless and on drugs. We met for\u00a0 the\u00a0 first time when he\u00a0 came home\u00a0 for the promotion of\u00a0 his film Issaq. He was accompanied by\u00a0 his very pretty leading lady Amyra Dastur who told me Prateik was\u00a0 \u201cafraid\u201d of me.<\/p>\n

I tried to\u00a0 put\u00a0 Prateik at ease. \u201cSir, please look after me,\u201d\u00a0 he beseeched with his\u00a0 pleading eyes. I\u00a0 felt as protective as\u00a0 I could for the vulnerable child-man. Prateik has Anubhav Sinha\u2019s\u00a0Mulk\u00a0<\/em>coming up\u00a0 where he plays an Indian Muslim accused of\u00a0 terror activities. It\u2019s\u00a0 a thankless role. But I\u00a0 have a feeling Prateik will bring his own insecurities\u00a0 into play while portraying this outcast.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

I feel a similar surge\u00a0 of protectiveness\u00a0 for\u00a0\u00a0 Jahnvi, though she hardly needs any sympathy from anybody. Fiercely protected\u00a0 by her mother when alive,\u00a0 Janhvi\u00a0 and\u00a0 her younger sister Khushi have\u00a0 coped\u00a0 ably with their\u00a0 mother\u2019s sudden loss . During her\u00a0 lifetime I don\u2019t think Sridevi was too keen to see her\u00a0 daughters become actresses.<\/p>\n

I remember\u00a0 speaking to her on this\u00a0 topic. The proud\u00a0 protective\u00a0 mother always\u00a0 said she wanted\u00a0 her daughters\u00a0 to get\u00a0 a proper education. \u201cLet them first finish studying, the\u00a0 we\u2019ll see what they want to,\u201d she once\u00a0 told me softly, as rumours of\u00a0 Janhvi\u2019s\u00a0 debut had begun to gather\u00a0 momentum. Sridevi didn\u2019t much care for\u00a0 such talk.<\/p>\n

From what\u00a0 I could\u00a0 make\u00a0 out she\u00a0 wasn\u2019t keen on her daughters\u00a0 becoming actresses. Not that she ever said this\u00a0 out loud.\u00a0 But every time we\u2019d\u00a0 speak on the subject she would grow worried and uncertain. The lack of a formal\u00a0 education in her own career\u00a0 bothered Sridevi. She had begun facing the\u00a0 camera\u00a0 from the\u00a0 time she was\u00a0 just 4.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen\u00a0 was\u00a0 the time to study? I was so\u00a0 hungry for\u00a0 a formal\u00a0 education. I don\u2019t want\u00a0 my children to undergo\u00a0 the same\u00a0 hunger,\u201d Sridevi once told me.\u00a0Boney was always more keen to make actors\u00a0 out of his daughters. In this matter\u00a0 I believe\u00a0 the husband and wife\u00a0 begged to\u00a0 defer. Boney felt,\u00a0\u2018Jeena\u00a0 yahan marna\u00a0 yaha<\/em>n\u2019 Sridevi felt, \u2018Ab bahot\u00a0 ho gaya.<\/em>\u2019 Now that it is happening I\u00a0 don\u2019t know how happy Sridevi would have been to see\u00a0 her daughter in\u00a0Dhadak<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 film\u00a0 comes with a\u00a0 heavy baggage. The Marathi version\u00a0Sairat\u00a0<\/em>became\u00a0 an instant\u00a0 classic. I doubt\u00a0Dhadak\u00a0<\/em>would get\u00a0 the same ovation. Remakes inevitably\u00a0 suffer in comparison. Nobody in his\u00a0 right mind would look for\u00a0Sairat\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0\u00a0Dhadak<\/em>. It would be as sacrilegious as looking for\u00a0Sholay\u00a0<\/em>in Ram Gopal Varma\u2019s\u00a0Aag – “<\/em>Fire”\u00a0 better or “Fire”\u00a0 worse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
