President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced plans to put a hold on U.S. funding for the World Health Organization, accusing the United Nations specialized agency of being \u201cvery China centric\u201d and criticizing its early guidance aimed at countering the international spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2018re going to put a hold on money spent to the WHO. We’re going to put a very powerful hold on it and we\u2018re going to see,\u201c Trump said at the outset of a coronavirus task force briefing at the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minutes later, though, the president walked back the declaration, telling reporters that he was \u201clooking into it\u201d and conceding that a global pandemic was \u201cmaybe not\u201d the best time to freeze funding for the international organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI mean, I\u2018m not saying I\u2018m going to do it, but we are going to look at it,\u201d Trump said, denying his comments from minutes earlier when pressed by reporters. \u201cI said we\u2019re going to look at it. We\u2019re going to investigate it, we’re going to look at it. But we will look at ending funding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The president appeared to be following through on a threat he\u2018d made earlier in the day to slash federal funding for the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
