{"id":12652,"date":"2019-10-23T13:25:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T07:55:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/?p=12652"},"modified":"2019-10-23T13:26:10","modified_gmt":"2019-10-23T07:56:10","slug":"hong-kong-extradition-bill-protests-hong-kong-extradition-bill-protests-hong-kong-extradition-bill-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.oyspa.com\/blog\/news\/hong-kong-extradition-bill-protests-hong-kong-extradition-bill-protests-hong-kong-extradition-bill-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong formally scraps extradition bill that sparked protests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Hong Kong&#8217;s legislature has formally withdrawn a controversial extradition bill that sparked months of unrest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill &#8211; which would have allowed for criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China &#8211; prompted outrage when it was introduced in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets and the bill was eventually suspended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But protesters vowed to continue their demonstrations, which have spiralled into a wider pro-democracy movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed bill would have allowed for Hong Kong to extradite criminal suspects to places it doesn&#8217;t have an extradition treaty with, including mainland China, Taiwan and Macau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics of the planned law feared that extradition to mainland China could subject people to arbitrary detention and unfair trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its formal withdrawal meets one of five key demands emphasised by some protesters. The others are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For the protests not to be characterised as a &#8220;riot&#8221;<\/li><li>Amnesty for arrested protesters<\/li><li>An independent inquiry into alleged police brutality<\/li><li>Implementation of complete universal suffrage<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The unrest that the bill sparked has become the worst crisis that Hong Kong has faced since the former British colony was handed back to China in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nIt has also presented a serious challenge to China&#8217;s leaders in Beijing, who have painted the demonstrators as
