The Uttar Pradesh government will celebrate the birthday of late Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh on December 23 as ‘Kisaan Samman Diwas’, an official said today.
Agriculture Production Commissioner Raj Pratap Singh said all divisional commissioners and district magistrates have been instructed to celebrate ‘Kisaan Samman Diwas’ at state, district and block levels.
Seminars and exhibitions should be organised, and farmers who have done commendable work should be felicitated, he said in a statement here.
Singh was born on December 23, 1902 in Noorpur in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, in a middle-class peasant family.
Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence, Singh entered the Independence movement. After Independence, he associated himself with socialism in rural areas.
He was the chief architect of land reforms in UP. He took a leading part in the formulation and finalisation of the Dept. Redemption Bill 1939, which brought great relief to rural debtors.
