Tattoos: People with tattoos have a higher chance of being mentally ill, says study

According to the Pew Research Center, 40% of millennials have tattoos and almost half of them have two to five tattoos and 18% of them have six or more. Milleannials’ love for tattoos is apparent, but a recent study’s findings revealed some worrisome details about individuals who tattoo often.

The study findings also found that tattooed people were more likely to have a higher number of sexual partners and to be smokers and have spent time in prison or jail. Apart from the mental health issues, they also were also observed to have problems with their sleep.

“Previous research has established an association between having a tattoo and engaging in risky behaviors. In an era of increasing popularity of tattoos, even among women and working professionals, we find these relationships persist but are not associated with lower health status,” said lead author Professor Karoline Mortensen of the University of Miami.

The research team from the University of Miami hopes that this link can help dermatologists and health care providers to be more sensitive to those suffering from mental health issues.
